A major restoration of the interior of the church and the replacement of the current roof is emerging on the horizon of our shared life at St Giles.

Many of you will have noticed that the decorative condition of the church is now in need of considerable attention. As is so often the case with historic buildings, one soon discovers that one necessary repair leads naturally to another and so we are now looking towards a programme that will include four principal elements:

  1. The complete replacement of the church roof. The present post-war copper roof has now reached the end of its useful life.

  2. The renewal of much of the electrical installation, together with improvements to the lighting for both worship and the wider use of the building.

  3. The complete redecoration of the church interior, carefully drawing upon the historic decorative schemes whilst presenting the building at its very best.

  4. Improvements to the principal entrance and the provision of better access for those with disabilities.

Such an undertaking will require both generosity and commitment.  During the course of the our St Giles Day lunch on 6 September, I will be outlining the plans and inviting those who feel so called to join a fundraising and project group, helping to lead this important work in the months and years ahead.

My hope is not that we should simply alter what has been handed down to us, but rather that we may prove faithful stewards of it; preserving and strengthening this beautiful church so that it may continue to serve the worship of Almighty God and the proclamation of the Gospel for generations yet to come.
