For the past year or so, St Giles PCC have been working towards our application for a Bronze Eco Church Award. This week we were successful!
Eco Church is a learning community of churches of all shapes and sizes open to all denominations. It provides a framework to support churches to take practical action on caring for God’s earth. Eco Church is run by A Rocha UK, a Christian charity working to protect and restore the natural world and committed to equipping Christians and churches in the UK to care for the environment.
As part of this work we have joined Westminster Churches Net Zero Forum and have hosted speakers from other member churches. We organise regular country walks and have set up a book-swap at the back of the church. A team of ten members of the congregation, supported by Spencer from the Phoenix Community Garden, have been planting a garden outside the front of the church, which has really come into its own as spring has sprung. We have also had an Energy Audit carried out on the church buildings to explore how we can reduce our energy use (and cost).
Now that we’ve got some momentum going in this journey towards becoming an Eco Church, we’d love to have a team of volunteers to help us in this work. If you are interested in joining our Eco Church team, there is an opportunity coming up to attend a Carbon Literacy for Congregations course at St James’ Piccadilly on 18th April. The course is run by an accredited trainer from the Carbon Literacy Trust and is being offered for free by the Diocese of London.
