St Giles in the Fields Churchyard 1
15-Aug-09
St. Giles in-the-Fields Church has appointed landscape architects, The Paul Hogarth Company to develop proposals for the regeneration of the Churchyard and surrounding public realm.
With large business and retail developments likely to be completed in the near future, the area around St. Giles in-the-Fields is likely to change quite dramatically over the next few years. These changes provide the ideal opportunity for the Church to review the role of the Churchyard and it’s unique relationship with the Phoenix Gardens.
Green space in London is a rare and precious commodity but the Churchyard is also valuable community resource. The proposals aim to renovate this space into an attractive and exciting urban green space for local people and visitors alike.
In summary the main objectives of the proposals are to:
- Improve public access into and through the Churchyard.
- Improve physical and visual relationship with surrounding streets, new building developments and The Phoenix Gardens.
- Increase the number and size of entrances and improve disabled access into the Churchyard.
- Address issues of public safety and reduced occurrence of anti-social behaviour.
- Provide a new versatile layout with opportunities for active and passive recreation and organised events.
- Establish management and maintenance agreements to protect this resource.
- Provide new community café with toilet facilities and outdoor seating. Create a modern layout using high quality materials, planting, furniture and lighting.
- Introduce a series of artworks into the Churchyard to interpret the history of St. Giles in-the-Fields.
